Now it is our turn to open the book of experiences that you will have on this cruise and to tell you, page by page, the journey that will awaken your senses as you discover the history of the Greek islands, the traditional cuisine combined with a modern way of life that preserves the cultural identity of Greece.
Day One: Santorini, "The Princess of Aegean"
Just as every fairy tale has its queen, Santorini reigns as the queen of Greek hearts in the story of the Aegean Sea. As one of the five volcanic centers in the region, it boasts one of the largest active volcanoes in the world.
Once upon a time, around 3,600 years ago, a massive volcanic eruption caused the island's center to sink into the sea, giving rise to the islands we now know as Santorini, Thirasia, and Aspronisi. The result was the breathtaking Santorini caldera, a vast crater left by the retreating volcano. Perched on its edge are dazzling white houses, churches, and luxury hotels, all built harmoniously with the island's traditional architecture and spirit. Today, glorious "Queen Santorini" is the most visited Greek island by tourists.❤️
Arrival in Santorini - Port of Athinios
When you arrive at the port of Athinios, you'll likely hear some fun facts about Santorini: it has more donkeys than people, more wine than water, and more chapels than houses. Getting to Fira, the island's capital, might seem expensive, but it's actually quite simple. You have two affordable options: take the public bus to Fira or book a transfer.
- Public Bus: Tickets can be purchased by the driver. Check out the timetables by the official provider, KTEL. A quick tip: Buses leave as soon as they're full and only return when the next ship arrives. To secure a spot, head straight to the bus after disembarking.
- Transfers: Several local providers offer transport for the 8km trip to Fira, and we highly recommend booking in advance through a reputable local transport company.
Fira: A Hidden Gem on the Caldera's Edge
A visit to Santorini isn’t complete without a stroll through its vibrant capital, Fira. The caldera views and charming shops are a must, along with attractions like the Museum of Prehistoric Thira and the Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral.
If you're traveling with kids and need a break, the interactive Lost Atlantis Museum (https://www.lost-atlantis.com) is a great option. For those feeling artistic, a ceramics class at 1260 Ceramics Studio provides a playful, hands-on experience that brings out your inner child.
Akrotiri: The Jewel of Santorini
The village of Akrotiri, where the prehistoric settlement of Santorini is located, is 10 km from Fira. It is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece. When you reach the sea, there are boats that will take you to the red and white beach for a few moments of relaxation and refreshment.
The good thing about Santorini is that distances are short, and there is plenty to see and do. The most important things to take with you are patience if you find traffic on the road and a bottle of iced water, as the heat starts early due to the high rocks surrounding it.
Oia: Where Magic Unfolds Before Your Eyes
As the magical sunset in Oia draws near, time feels like it slows down. Since it's 22 km from Akrotiri, a private transfer is recommended. Despite the crowds of eager visitors, the energy in the air is unmistakable. Oia is often hailed as the most beautiful town in Santorini, and its breathtaking views will leave you mesmerized!
Strolling through the narrow, charming streets lined with well-kept shops feels like a journey into a dream. The 20-minute walk to the sunset viewpoint flies by as the stunning scenery captivates you. Before you know it, hunger strikes and the perfect way to end the evening is with a delicious dinner to complete the experience.
Dinner Recommendation:
Roka Oia restaurant blends traditional Greek flavors with modern culinary flair. Set in a beautifully preserved 1912 house with a charming courtyard, the atmosphere is as unique as the food, and the warmth of the people makes the experience even more special.
As you head back to the cruise ship, it’s hard to feel disappointed, knowing you’ve gathered enough memories and stories in Santorini to cherish for a long time.
Day Two: Mykonos, "The Famous Lady"
Known from one end of the world to the other, Mykonos brings a breath of fresh air to the Cyclades, and even before you set foot (the right foot, for luck, of course) in the island's port, you will understand why it is considered the international star of the Aegean.
Mykonos is an island of contrasts, blending old with new, traditional with modern, and simplicity with luxury. It draws over two million tourists annually, including artists, media personalities, and journalists.
....However, its most famous resident is Petros the Pelican, the beloved island mascot.
The distance between the port and Choras, the island's capital, is about 3.5 km. If you like walking, try it and enjoy the clean Aegean air. A hat and sunscreen will both prove useful. For easy transport, the Mykonos Sea Bus (https://www.mykonos-seabus.gr) runs every half hour from the port, taking you straight to the heart of the island, where you can experience the vibrant energy of Mykonos both day and night. Keep in mind that Mykonos is known as the "island of winds," making it a top spot for surfers.
Welcome to Chora
Chora, the capital of Mykonos, is known for its uniform architecture, featuring flat, all-white buildings with whitewashed courtyards. The town is a maze of narrow streets and charming alleys lined with blooming flowers and the churches with the one that stands out...Panagia Paraportiani. The church is in the island's old castle, north-west of Chora. It is named after the small gate of the castle.
Stroll through the streets and soak in the island's unique aura of freedom. Let the dreamy scenery guide you towards the Alefkandra Quarter. If hunger strikes, stop by one of the local bakeries or a nearby supermarket, where prices remain reasonable. Indulge in traditional treats like onion pie, honey bread, almond cake from Kyclamina bakery, or a slice of delicious chocolate cake from Koutsoukos bakery.
Alefkandra: "Little Venice of the Aegean"
In the Alefkandra area, we have a wonderful surprise waiting for you. Open your eyes wide because what unfolds before you is no illusion—it's the enchanting "Little Venice of the Aegean." Here, vibrant houses seem to float as the sea gently kisses their foundations, while nearby cafés and bars provide perfect spots to unwind. The iconic windmills stand tall, completing the mesmerizing landscape.
As the sun sets, it's an ideal moment for romantic conversations over a glass of wine in one of the picturesque bars. A short stroll brings you to Gialos, home to the elegant Mykonos Town Hall, a two-story building from 1780, and the island's famous pelicans. This area is also renowned for its lively clubs and the renowned Bakoyas Café, a treat for true food lovers.
Dive into the Crystal Clear Waters of Mykonos!
Once you've warmed up from walking and are ready for a swim, Mykonos offers some of the most beautiful beaches in Greece. Though summer crowds are common, you’ll still enjoy the crystal-clear blue-green waters.
Just five minutes from the island’s center in the Orno area, you'll find Megali Ammos Beach, with a few umbrellas and plenty of wind. The north winds often "party" here, making it perfect for surfing, diving, and snorkeling.
On the island's southern side are the famous Paradise and Super Paradise beaches. These popular spots can be reached by car, public transport, or boat from Plati Gialo. Expect lively beach bars, music events from midday until the early morning, and pricey sunbeds if you can snag one.
For those seeking something quieter and more secluded, head to Agios Sostis beach on the northern part of the island. It's a haven of peace and freedom, free from the winds and just 5 km from the center. There's even a charming taverna that operates without electricity, serving cold dishes, fresh salads, and Mykonos' traditional cheeses.
Whichever beach you choose, you'll find yourself back in Mykonos town by day's end. Whether it's shopping in the town’s charming boutiques, joining the vibrant parties that give Mykonos its "Ibiza of Greece" reputation, or enjoying a mouthwatering souvlaki at the popular Pepper Souvlaki & More shop, there's something for everyone to end the day perfectly.
